The book presents the history of the art of painting in Serbia from the Middle Ages until the present, showing the cultural, ideological, and political conditions of its development. The author follows the transformations of the Serbian visual output – from the period of domination of the Byzantine standards, through the process of occidentalization/Europeanization of the aesthetics in the 18th and 19th centuries, to the avant-garde artistic ideological experiments of the interwar period. She also discusses the contemporary – concurrent with the global trends – forms of using art to influence the public. The research perspective is determined by the visual studies, in particular the concepts allowing the interpretation of the artistic output as a space for social communication and identity practice.
