The Slavic studies in Warsaw have their origin in 1915, when the first seminar in Slavic studies at the University of Warsaw was established. The beginnings were modest, however, the Slavic Studies from the early years were directed by eminent scholars. During some decades the research and studies focused mainly on Slavic linguistics, and history of literatures, but with time it has evolved towards a research of culture. This “anthropological turn” has had an important impact on development of the discipline and now the Slavic studies can be considered as a genuine interdisciplinary activity. However, the basis of study remains still the language teaching and learning of culture in its various aspects.
